High School Butte

What is High School Butte?

Jackson’s Backyard Butte

Just off South Park Loop Road, High School Butte is best known for the short, steep switchbacks that ascend the butte and offer a wide view of the Tetons. Easy trailhead access has made the quick hike a local’s ritual, whether after school or before the sun rises. In 2020, the Jackson Hole Land Trust bought 18 acres to protect winter wildlife habitat and light-on-the-land summer use. Higher up, a private conservation easement keeps the top wild, protecting the habitat that makes the butte as much a home for wildlife as a haven for the people below. Today, the Jackson Hole Land Trust is fundraising to purchase the trailhead parcel, preserving permanent community access to the butte’s iconic switchbacks.

For Sale: High School Butte

The Jackson Hole Land Trust has quietly been leading an effort to purchase the 3.74-acre parcel at the base of High School Butte — preserving open space and access to the familiar switchbacks that ascend the butte. For more than 30 years, the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole has kept it open, and now that the church needs to sell the parcel to build employee housing, the Jackson Hole Land Trust is stepping in to secure permanent, safe public access for the whole community.
