Field Trips

The Jackson Hole Land Trust works to conserve the scenic, wildlife and agricultural values of this area. Our summer field trips offer a first hand perspective on some of the area’s 20,000+ acres of conservation easement-protected land and an opportunity to learn about the Land Trust’s conservation efforts in Jackson Hole and Dubois.

2010 SUMMER FIELD TRIP OFFERINGS

Munger Mountain Hike
Tuesday, June 29th 8am-4pm

Starting on The Lower Snake River Ranch, we will hike through the private grazing land of the ranch to the summit of this prominent peak. Bill Resor will be our host and tell of the ranch’s history and how the cattle operation is run. The top of the peak will afford us a panoramic lunch spot with views of numerous other conservation easement protected properties.
Involves steep up and downhill hiking.

Old Barn Tour
Thursday, July 15th 9am-3:30pm

The old barns of Jackson Hole are part of the cultural landscape. The barn's joints, dovetails, and frames reveal the stories of their builders and insight into what Jackson Hole was like at the time they were constructed. Join Kurt Dubbe, a noteworthy historic rebuilder, on this tour of great old shelters as he deciphers the architecture from a past era. Barns to be featured include the Hardeman, Snake River Ranch, relocated Whitegrass, and Trail Creek.

Raptor Drawing at Hardeman Barns
Thursday, August 12th 9am-11am

It is one thing to gaze at a bird from a distance and pen a drawing. It is  entirely different to be able to study these noble creatures up close and have time to create detailed images of their incredible features. Come see the Teton Raptor Center birds up close and receive instruction on how to sketch their identifying features from Meredith Campbell. We will gather at the Hardeman Barns and enjoy studying these finely plumed models through artistic eyes.
Any medium welcome.

Flat Creek Ranch Four Wheel Drive Excursion
Tuesday, September 21st 8:30am-4pm

Tucked in the Gros Ventre, at the end of a long bumpy drive, is the Flat Creek Ranch. Secluded below the Sleeping Indian, the Ranch is a feast of beauty and history. After disembarking from the trusty vehicles, we will take time to explore the ranch and listen to the colorful stories of the intriguing characters that have spent time here.

Elk Bugling at the Jenkins Ranch
Tuesday, September 28th 4pm-7pm

The Jenkins Ranch provides a glorious golden cottonwood forest habitat for this seasonal ritual. Learn about this and other mating games from staff biologist Tom Segerstrom. We will stroll through the cottonwood river bottom in search of this ancient assertion of dominance and power in the heart of the mating season for elk.
